Emergency braking assistancesystems: MESSRING offers new and official NHTSA test equipment for the American market
Cooperation with Wolf CompositeSolutions / Retrofitting of the original
AEB test system / Fulfilment of the latest US NCAP regulations
Munich, November 18, 2015–For months, there has been much speculation in the
automotive industry, and now it’s finally official: The Strikeable Surrogate Vehicle (or “SSV” for short) is the new test system which the American NHTSA
(National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) will be using to test emergency braking assistance systems in the US. This is because the US NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) will be
adopting Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as the recommended safety technology in the assessment
criteria for all new vehicles as of 2018. This is the USA’s reaction to the rising importance of assistance
systems which can prevent accidents or reduce the consequences of accidents through early intervention in
hazardous situations. In the test, the SSV simulates a vehicle driving aheadwhich is detected by the test
specimen’s assist system and triggers a braking or evasion maneuver. The SSV consists of a carbon target
which realistically mimics the rear end of a car which is pulled by a sled carrier structure with a towing vehicle
along a guide track rail which is to be installed over nearly 460m of a test track.
While the industry is still discussing the differences between the American approach and the European test
procedure of the EuroNCAP, German crash test facility manufacturer MESSRING is already providing a new multi
-purpose solution which is suitable for both test procedures. To accomplish this, the SSV was adapted to the
track system manufactured and sold by MESSRING, which has become the undisputed standard in Europe and
Asia, in a cooperative effort with the American carbon fiber specialist Wolf Composite Solutions which supported the NHTSA’s development every step of the way.
This has resulted in a new hybrid solution which enables testing with both the American SSV from Wolf
CompositeSolutionsand the EVT (EuroNCAP Vehicle Target) from MESSRING, and combines the SSV Target with
the advantages of the sturdy and precise laterally guided towing system of the original AEB test system.
The American SSV can also be conveniently added to existing towing systems without requiring any conversion
work. This provides maximum flexibility in terms of the required test scenarios and prevents the need for
additional space in the form of a track rail firmly installed on the test track. This has resulted in a highly effective solution for companies operating on a global level.
“We are pleased that we will already be able to offer our customers who want to test vehicles according to US
NCAP regulations the fully developed hybrid solution as of mid-December 2015. The field of active safety in
particular is becoming more and more important to us as a crash test facility manufacturer. We are constantly
researching new testing equipment for vehicle, passenger and pedestrian protection. For instance, we are
currently conducting a joint research project with the Ingolstadt University of Applied Scienceson the subject of
active safety testing for pedestrian protection assistance systems which is already gaining worldwide attention,” says Dierk Arp, Executive Director of MESSRING.
Aside from the markets of North, Central and South America, which are served by Wolf Composite Solutions,
MESSRING will be handling worldwide sales and service for both versions: The Hybrid solution with the
European original towing system as well as the American SSV with the NHTSA track rail system.
